Understandably, the powers that be at Toyota Motor Sales want nothing to do with their all-new Avalon being compared against their comparably sized, priced and equally fresh Lexus ES. Trust us -- we asked and were denied. Of course, TMS is not afraid of the ES outclassing the Avalon, as that's how it should play out, given that the former comes from blue-blood Lexus and the latter blue-collar Toyota. No, the reticence stems from what they know and, after having driven both, what we now know: the Avalon -- designed, engineered, and built in America -- is better.
Subjectively, the spread between the Avalon and ES was even greater. If you're wondering how that's possible, given that the previous generations of Avalon were known more for their three-box shape, JELL-O ride, and sailboat steering, well, let's just say the new car represents a fundamental shift. For 2013, the fourth-gen delights with striking sheet metal accented by a shorter height and overhangs; a thick-rimmed leather-wrapped steering wheel with available shift paddles that fire off throttle-blip downshifts (yes, in an Avalon!); a Sport mode that heightens throttle, steering, and transmission response (again!); and 18-inch alloys wearing 45-series rubber. Doesn't sound like grandpa's Toyota now does it?
The backseat deserves extra attention, if only because Toyota will be offering a livery version this go-around. With the demise of the Town Car, which accounted for about 80 percent of sedans sold for those shuttling purposes, Toyota saw a big opportunity for the big-seat, big-mileage Avalon. Available only in a black-on-black exterior/interior color treatment, the livery edition can be had with the V-6 ($32,155) or the gas-electric hybrid ($34,545).
